SHOOTING HEAD (SH) - This line is a variation of the weight-forward line. A specialized head is attached to the running line, either monofilament or level line. The head itself is typically thirty feet long but may be shorter and can be floating at sinking line. Shooting heads are often made as a composite from other lines using loops or lines. Commercial shooting heads are also available. Shooting heads are only necessary in big water situations for large trout, steelhead, salmon or other big fish. They allow the angler to shoot the line a long distance after one or two false casts and require more advanced casting technique.
